"American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources" Wow! I have read at least 50 books dedicated to whitetail deer in my lifetime. This one is by far the best. "American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources" is the most informative book on the American Whitetail I have read in years. From the field to the freezer, Terry Townsend captures every aspect of the sport we love. His love of the hunt and his respect for the animal and its' environment is unmistakable. I use to say all you needed on a hunt were the three B's: Binoculars, Bullets, and Brains. I now make it the four B's: Binoculars, Bullets, Brains, and this Book.

Jimmy Holt, a native Nashvillian, is probably the best-known outdoor personality in Tennessee. He has hosted The Tennessee Outdoors-men television show for more than thirty years, written the outdoor pages for The Tennessean, and hosted his own radio show in Nashville. He also writes regularly for hunting and fishing magazines.
"--For many years now, I have read and listened to deer hunters as they told stories about their first hunting trips into the woods in search of the whitetail deer. Terry Townsend's story is the latest I've had the pleasure of reading and his book, "American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources" is the most interesting and complete deer hunting information I've read. He talks the talk, takes you into the woods, makes you smell the great outdoors and then has you soaking wet as you climb into your tree stand. He talks about sighting in your weapon, setting up a hunting camp, reminds you to contact land owners before you enter their property. If your interested in deer hunting and need information about hunting gear and accessories, helping juvenile hunters, camouflage, and much, much more "American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources" will provide it. Chapters revealing information on scrapes and rubs, the rut, deer tracks and field dressing can also be found, detailing the do's and don'ts."

As published in the Daily News by Brian Mulherin, staff writer: "Hunting book a good resourceYou can't learn to hunt form a book alone. But if you could, "American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources" would be a good candidate. The book, By Terry F. Townsend of Tennessee, is a remarkably complete volume for hunters ranging from beginners to seasoned veterans. The layout of the book is logical, starting with pre-hunt planning and finishing with 25 venison recipes. Townsend does his best to cover every aspect of a well-planned hunt in between. Some may notice that the writing is a little rough in spots and somewhat repetitive, but Townsend gets his points across and explains in his introduction that he believes the repetition of some information is important.Beyond those two sticking points, the book is a valuable reference for hunters.

For example, the safety section has photos of 41 venomous snakes, four venomous spiders and the varying forms of three ticks. I'm sure hunters who travel the U.S. would love to have the book along in rattlesnake country.

The food sources section of the book contains more than 70 drawings of types of tree and plant leaves and their respective fruits and nuts. It also includes photographs of common bark patterns, useful in late fall firearm season after the leaves have fallen. The tracking section has a chart that explains how to tell what age and sex the deer that left a track might be. It also explains how a track left by a walking deer differs from a track left by a running deer. There are also some helpful tips on scrapes and rubs.

"Normally young bucks do not rerub trees, so if you do find trees that have been rubbed several times, this normally suggests a dominant buck in the area," Townsend writes. Townsend's strength is in his knowledge. He doesn't just explain how to hunt deer in a blind, but how a deer drive should be planned, how to still hunt, how to stalk a deer, call or rattle a deer in and when to use each tactic.

Diagrams of deer at different angles help inexperienced hunters visualize the vital zone of a deer for shot placement, especially from awkward vantage points. The photos and diagrams throughout the book are extremely helpful, especially in the chapter covering butchering your own deer. The section on rough-scoring your deer's rack is also informative and well illustrated.

Townsend goes into extensive detail on food plot planning and management, but doesn't spend so much time on it that a public-land hunter will be turned off by the subject.
Especially helpful are the chapters on deer body language and deer habits. Townsend is clearly a student of his prey, reading meaning into every tail twitch.

Some of the things even experienced hunters may overlook are also covered in great detail. Townsend devotes an entire chapter to the various methods of hiding human scent. While many hunters focus on scent-hiding suits or sprays for their boots, many also disregard an important source of human odor.

"Wash your caps thoroughly, since you perspire greatly through your head," Townsend writes. "This is an often overlooked item of clothing that should require some of the most dedicated effort. You should take more than one cap with you on hunting trips so you can switch off since washing them is seldom practical while you are on a trip."
The book is beautifully designed with a minor flaw: The background photo pattern of leaves on every page makes reading for long periods difficult. But since the 486-page book is fairly well indexed and arranged as a reference guide, reading the entire book in one sitting is not likely."

American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources is published by Trafford Publishing, with a retail price of $29.95."

"Terry Townsend has given you the opportunity to engage a comprehensive look at hunting the most elusive creature in North America . . . the Whitetail. Some books offer strategies and tips, but Terry's work goes beyond that. He helps you build a foundation for better hunting, even to the point of what to do after you harvest the animal. I can tell you this . . . any hunter would be a better hunter by taking advice from a man who's well seasoned in the ways of the whitetail. And that's Terry Townsend."

"The author of a new book, 'American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources', Terry F. Townsend, of Columbia, Tn. has stepped on board with TNdeer.com His book on whitetail tips and resources is chocked full of good information for the deer hunter. The author of a new book, 'American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources', Terry F. Townsend, of Columbia, Tn. has stepped on board with TNdeer.com His book on whitetail tips and resources is chocked full of good information for the deer hunter. Even with nearly 500 pages, it is still small enough to add to any backpack for a trip to the woods. Tips on how to be successful every year with putting venison in the freezer with tips on how to read deer sign in the woods will guide even the novice of deer hunters. Matter of fact, I recommend this book to any current deer hunter who has a youngster who is interested in deer hunting. There are many pictures explaining exactly what the text is about. Graphics and maps are included.

The new book, just completed late last year, will benefit any deer hunter. New comers to the sport can read thousands of great tips, while the seasoned hunter can read many things he has learned, yet forgotten as time progresses.

There are four main section so the book, American Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips and Resources. Mr. Townsend takes you all the way from before the hunt to what to do after you have that deer back to camp. Tips on scouting, what to look for and where, shot placement, understanding good deer management, dealing with scent control, tree stand set up and the different methods of hunting this great wild animal lace across pages with a leafy background. The leafy gray background adds to the book's appeal and makes it less noticeable in the hands of a still hunter, reading it on stand.

There is also a section for scoring and aging your deer. Recipe pages and links to web sites are included. And guess what? www.tndeer.com is listed right among those. For those interested, I donated some of my deer photos to Mr. Townsend for use in this book and to my surprise, he used them all as full page photos. At the bottom of each, he acknowledges each with my name and tndeer.com.

Be watching for the link to appear soon, where you can order a copy of this wonderful book. It will make a great addition to any hunter's library of good reads. But I like the feature that it is still small enough to pack along on a hunt and enjoy reading on stand during those lull hours of nondeer movement. Matter of fact, my personal copy went to stand with me several times this past season! I enjoyed refreshing my mind of many of things I read from within this book while waiting on the monster buck that never showed. I reckon I will have to read up on prescouting and do a better job of stand placement next season.

Thank you Mr. Terry Townsend for joining us at the house this year. And thank you for giving us a sponsorship to this neat book you have taken the time to put together as a true American Whitetail hunter."
